Our 107th season opens with music that has won the hearts of audiences from coast to coast. The celebration begins with Florence Price, a pioneer in classical music as the first African-American woman whose music was played by a major symphony orchestra. George Gershwin, the toast of Broadway, was in his early twenties when his showy jazz concerto, Rhapsody in Blue, oozed from his fingertips. While this gorgeous piece makes you feel good, Rach 2 makes you feel everything. Beauty. Passion. Power. Danger. Drama. Despair. From its achingly beautiful melodies to its almost demonic finish, it’s the perfect tour-deforce for our season opener.
