Beethoven’s Legacy
Inspiration is where you find it. Somehow Beethoven found his amid (despite) Napoleon’s bombardment of Vienna, where he was forced to hide in his brother’s basement to escape danger. His last piano concerto was destined to become the “Emperor”—not for the invader, but because it was—and still is—one of the most original, imaginative, and difficult concertos of all time.
With “technique to burn,” thoughtfulness, and soul, virtuoso Jonathan Bass is the perfect match for the composer’s brilliance, which spills over into our season finale, Symphony No. 7. Beethoven’s favorite. It’s immense and intense, ever-hopeful and defiantly joyful. The perfect way to celebrate Beethoven on the bicentennial of his passing.
